One tiny event
Nothing seems abnormal before you start school. You only see your family and friends so you don’t have a clue what goes on in the rest of the big world out there. We were a regular family, my mom was an army brat, one of four girls. My dad was one of seven boys. I was the youngest of two kids. It all started innocently enough, funny how one tiny event can change the entire course of your life.
So my dad is at work and someone offers him a “Truth” book. Jehovah’s Witnesses used to charge for their literature back then, but I know for a fact my dad didn’t pay for it. If you know my dad, he doesn’t like to let go of money, but he’ll take anything for free. Dad brought the book home and probably had no intention of reading it, just “Score!” free book. One innocent little event, not even memorable to most, but I’ve heard the story my whole life. The moment that set the course for the next 28 years.
Apparently my mom was bored to tears, or maybe crazy, but for some reason she decided to read the book just to prove it was wrong. Never would have happened if my dad had turned down this free book or thrown it in the trash as I’ve seen so many people do, even right in front of me, since then. Well this “Truth” book held promises of everlasting life, God’s favor and a group of people that would take you in and love you more than your own family ever even thought about. If you raised your kids “in the Truth” they would have exemplary morals and live a wonderful Christian life guided by God’s principals and eventually, even after death, you would all live together forever, young a beautiful in eternal paradise on Earth.
So here my mother is, two young kids she wants the best for, her family and support system are 800 miles away and she’s lonely. What better gift for your kids than to give them this whole world wide organization to become a part of. It’s like the biggest family on Earth and to make it even better, their morals are beyond compare. So mom started to “study” with Jehovah’s Witnesses.
